Rec Soccer

Collingswood Oaklyn SC (COSC) does not provide intramural or rec soccer programming. The recreation departments of Collingswood and Oaklyn provide volunteer-run rec soccer experiences for local residents. COSC works together with these two programs to share resources and fields.

What Are the Differences Between Travel Soccer and Rec Soccer?

There are a number of differences between travel soccer and recreational, or “rec” soccer. It is important to understand the characteristics and time commitment before registering for one of the programs.

Travel Soccer

Travel soccer is generally for more committed players and families. Teams practice a couple of nights per week and travel to various towns for weekend league games.

  1. Travel soccer is focused on fun, player development, and competition.

  2. Teams are formed by player birth year, gender, and ability.

  3. Tryouts are held to assess players’ abilities. While we do our best to include all players by forming multiple teams, roster sizes may require us to make cuts.

  4. Usually two nights of team practice each week.

  5. Usually one league match per week is held on Saturday (girls) or Sunday (boys) afternoons. Matches are played both home and away in various NJ towns.

  6. Teams usually play in both the fall and spring seasons. Some teams may participate in winter or summer leagues.

  7. Cost is $185 per season as well as about $80 for a uniform kit that lasts for 2 years.

Rec Soccer

Rec soccer is a fun learning environment for children to be introduced to the sport and learn basic ball skills in their local communities.

  1. Rec soccer is focused on fun, participation, and learning.

  2. At the younger ages, teams are coed. Teams may be made up of different genders and ability levels as well as a small range of ages. Boys and girls teams are usually created for grades 1-2 and 3-5.

  3. There are no tryouts and every registered player is assigned to a team.

  4. Usually one night of team practice each week.

  5. One match per week on Saturday mornings in the town’s local park or school field.

  6. The rec soccer season is held in the fall. Additional clinics may be held in the spring or summer months.

  7. Cost is about $40 per season. This includes a team uniform t-shirt for each player.
